The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (an independent organization based in Geneva) expressed its “grave concern on Monday over the sharp Israeli escalation in targeting civilians in recent weeks in the Gaza Strip, including the obliteration of entire families and the killing of women and children at horrific rates, amid the international community’s continued inability to stop the ongoing genocide that has been ongoing for nearly 19 months.”
The Observatory said in a statement that “while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was denying to the media the targeting of civilians, his army’s aircraft were carrying out more airstrikes that deliberately killed children and women, in a recurring pattern of horrific crimes that are no longer the exception but rather a systematic policy that defies all international laws and norms.”
It added that “in just seven days, Israel killed 345 Palestinians and injured 770 others, according to field data showing that at least 94 percent of the victims were civilians, 75 percent of whom were children.”
The Observatory emphasized that “this unprecedented rise in civilian casualties coincides with Netanyahu’s continued issuance of false media statements publicly denying the targeting of civilians, in a blatant attempt to mislead international public opinion and cover up crimes committed on the ground.” It noted that “Israel’s deliberate targeting of temporary and simple shelters (tents) or semi-destroyed homes with heavy missiles or suicide drones, without justified military necessity, reveals a systematic policy aimed at inflicting the greatest possible number of civilian casualties and sowing terror among the population, a practice explicitly prohibited under international law.”
