The New York Times newspaper said in an article that the operations of the US Navy in the Middle East have not only failed to restore traffic through the vital maritime corridor linking the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal but have also pushed the Trump administration into an “expensive vortex” that may escalate and be difficult to withdraw from.
Follow ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
The newspaper referred to the positioning of two strike carrier groups off the coast of Yemen, with a daily operating cost of about $6.5 million for each. It also mentioned the use of the stealthy B-2 bombers, whose flight time costs about $90,000 per hour, which carried out air strikes.
It added that the Navy is launching interceptor missiles against missiles, which may cost up to $2 million per missile, to intercept Houthi aircraft and missiles, which cost only a few thousand dollars.
It confirmed that the total cost of the US Navy’s military operation in Yemen, the poorest country in the Middle East, may reach $2 billion by May, adding that the air strikes indicate that the US hasn’t yet achieved air superiority over the country, despite hundreds of raids that endanger the pilots.
It explained that the Saudis have launched an estimated 25,000 air strikes on the Houthis over seven years, as part of a campaign that has resulted in the deaths of an estimated 377,000 people in Yemen, and yet the Houthis’ control of the coast has remained “steadfast.”
It stressed that Trump’s decision to go to war, given his inability to defeat the Houthis by air power alone, will soon face the same “losing decision” that has confused his predecessors in the Middle East: withdrawal or escalation.
