In context, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that work is underway to prepare a new navigation system in the Strait of Hormuz in cooperation with an Arab country, indicating that the project has reached its final stages and will be implemented after the war ends.
Tehran affirmed that the strait would remain open to countries that are not participating in military operations against it, considering that restricting the passage of “aggressor states” is consistent with international law under conflict conditions.
It also reported that imposing fees on the transit of ships is still under study, within the framework of new arrangements aimed at regulating navigation and enhancing the security of the vital waterway, while emphasizing the role of coastal states, particularly Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, in managing and securing transit traffic.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs indicated that the rules governing navigation in the strait may change after the war, explaining that the current circumstances do not allow for the application of the same previous systems in light of the existing military threats.
The Iranian escalation in the Strait of Hormuz raises growing international concern, given its strategic importance as an international waterway through which a large percentage of global oil supplies pass.
