The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip announced today that approximately 70,000 tents sheltering displaced people were flooded as a result of the storm that struck the Strip within 12 hours of its onset, estimating initial losses at around $3 million.
In a press statement, the office said that the storm caused dozens of walls to collapse, resulting in injuries of varying severity, including serious injuries, across the Strip’s governorates.
It warned of the risk of collapse of dozens of dilapidated and structurally unsound buildings, damaged by bombardment during the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip for the past three years.
The office held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the catastrophic consequences due to the continued closure of crossings and the prevention of the entry of essential shelter and reconstruction materials urgently needed by the population.
It called on the international community and UN and international organizations to intervene immediately and assume their humanitarian, legal, and moral responsibilities to save the lives of the displaced and provide them with the means to survive and be protected.
