After weeks of Yemeni escalation, Saudi Arabia has begun sending new messages amid reports of its exploration of diplomatic paths for de-escalation. But has Saudi Arabia truly decided to “come down from the tree,” or is it merely trying to maneuver for more?

In recent days, Saudi Arabia has witnessed intensive diplomatic activity to find a way out of the Yemen quagmire. This began with Saudi Arabia summoning the Japanese Foreign Minister—a prominent client of Saudi oil—and dedicating discussions with him to the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait and Yemen. It extended to a joint session that included the ambassadors of America, Britain, the European Union, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, all dedicated to discussing what Saudi Arabia describes diplomatically as efforts for stability in Yemen.
Saudi moves were not limited to these steps. It continued sending messages to Yemen and the region, the latest of which was the announcement by a Saudi shipping company of operating direct routes between Jeddah and Hudaydah ports, although Sana’a has yet to comment.
These messages to Yemen come in parallel with messages to Iran, hinted at by the Speaker of Parliament in his latest statement regarding security and economic cooperation. All are indicators of a Saudi decision to move towards a new path to establish stability in the region after reaching the conviction that subjugating countries—whether Iran or Yemen—militarily is impossible. However, the question remains about the seriousness of Saudi Arabia in activating this.
In reality, Saudi Arabia does not appear to have many options.
