The ongoing fuel crisis poses a major challenge to our ability to provide services

The Mayor of Gaza, Dr. Yahya al-Sarraj, stated that the ongoing fuel crisis in Gaza poses a significant challenge to the municipality’s ability to provide essential services to citizens, particularly those directly dependent on the operation of heavy machinery and equipment.

Al-Sarraj explained that the limited quantities currently available do not meet even the minimum operational needs, especially for road clearing and debris removal.

He reported that, as a result of this severe shortage, road clearing operations are now limited to creating narrow passages for pedestrians, with debris piled up on both sides. This has significantly slowed the pace of work and affected residents’ ability to reach their homes easily and safely.

Al-Sarraj pointed out that the crisis also directly impacts sanitation services, as the municipality’s capacity to operate waste collection and removal vehicles for sufficient hours is reduced, leading to waste accumulation and increased health and environmental risks.

He added that emergency maintenance work, the operation of sewage treatment plants, and responding to urgent calls are also hampered due to the inability to operate machinery and equipment as required.

The mayor of Gaza added: In light of this reality, the municipality is forced to prioritize and allocate available fuel to the most sensitive sectors, which affects the level of service and reduces the ability of crews to respond quickly to increasing needs.
