The Italian Defense Magazine published a report that shed light on the potential challenges facing the US Navy in its efforts to integrate new systems to intercept drones on board its Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, despite the urgent need for these capabilities to confront threats such as those it faces in the Red Sea.
Follow ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
The magazine said that the decision to integrate new defense systems came as a reaction to the growing threat of loitering munitions and drones used by Iran-backed Houthis.
It pointed out that the US Navy has not fully addressed the logistical and technical difficulties that may accompany the wide-scale integration of these new systems.
The magazine questioned the readiness of this system to be relied upon in real combat environments such as the Red Sea, where rapid and reliable response to threats is of utmost importance, warning that the ROADRUNNER-M system from Anduril is still undergoing operational evaluation and its combat effectiveness has not yet been confirmed.
The magazine emphasized that the urgent need to train naval crews to operate and maintain these new systems poses another challenge, “as the introduction of new technologies requires investment in intensive training programs to ensure that sailors can use these systems efficiently and effectively in various operational conditions.”
The magazine pointed out that the lessons learned from operations in the Red Sea impose on the US Navy the necessity of finding effective defensive solutions against drones.
