The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO),Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned on Sunday of the “worsening risk of famine in the Gaza Strip,” stressing that “more than 100,000 children, in addition to 37,000 pregnant and lactating women, will suffer from acute malnutrition by next April.”

In a post on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter),Ghebreyesus added that “progress made in combating famine in Gaza remains extremely fragile,” warning that “in the worst-case scenario, including renewed conflict and a halt to humanitarian aid, the entire Gaza Strip could face the risk of famine by mid-April 2026.”

He pointed out that “the people of Gaza are suffering from widespread destruction of infrastructure, the collapse of livelihoods, and a decline in local food production, along with restrictions on humanitarian operations, which are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.”

He added that “only about 50% of health facilities in the Gaza Strip are partially functioning and are suffering from a severe shortage of essential medical supplies and equipment, which are often subject to complex entry procedures and restrictions.” “Urgent.”

The Director-General of the World Health Organization called for “the urgent approval of the entry of essential medical supplies and equipment into hospitals in the Gaza Strip,” stressing that “this is necessary to improve life-saving services and expand access to healthcare in light of the escalating crisis.”
