A new human rights report states that 43,000 people have been disabled in the Gaza Strip since the start of the “genocidal war.” The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has called for enabling these individuals to travel abroad for treatment and rehabilitation, given their dire living conditions and the shortage of medical supplies.
On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on December 3rd, a day designated by the United Nations in 1992 to support people with disabilities, the Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights stated that its data indicates that prior to the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, approximately 85,000 people with disabilities were registered, while 43,000 new cases were recorded during the offensive.
The report explained that these new cases represent 25% of all injuries sustained during the “genocidal war,” while the overall disability rate has increased by 75%. Most of these disabilities are motor impairments resulting from amputations, spinal cord injuries, and brain injuries.
The organization noted in its report that the number of elderly people with disabilities had also increased by 75%. Furthermore, 90% of rehabilitation centers and services provided to people with disabilities had been destroyed.
The report emphasized the worsening suffering of people with disabilities as a result of the Israeli occupation forces’ destruction of rehabilitation centers on which they relied heavily. This is compounded by the loss of assistive devices due to continuous and repeated displacement. People with disabilities, whether newly acquired or those with disabilities from previous years, are suffering from dire humanitarian conditions, including severe shortages of food, nutritional supplements, vitamins, and proteins. This was particularly acute during the famine in the Gaza Strip, which exacerbated the suffering of people with disabilities, who depend heavily on proper nutrition to maintain their health and functioning.
