Fears have escalated within the Israeli security establishment over the repercussions of the Houthis’ control of the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, following the withdrawal of Yemeni government forces from Mayyun Island at the entrance to the strait. Israeli assessments suggest the development could threaten maritime trade movement, which “Israel” relies on to secure the majority of its imports.
According to a report published by the “Ynet” website, the Commander of the Israeli Navy, Major General Eyal Harel, issued directives to raise the readiness of systems and reinforce forces in the maritime arena, in anticipation of any sudden developments, noting that “Israel” doesn’t intend at this stage to carry out military intervention unless it is subjected to a direct attack.
The report explained that the narrowing of the maritime passage to about 18 kilometers places ships within the range of simple offensive means, including “Kornet” missiles and booby-trapped boats, without the need for advanced radar systems.
Israeli security circles speak of criticism of the performance of Saudi Arabia and the forces of the Yemeni government loyal to it, against the backdrop of the Houthis’ ability to impose their control over the area without significant resistance. Meanwhile, “Axios” reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made two calls to US President Donald Trump last week to request strikes against the Houthis, but Trump rejected the request and said publicly that the Houthis do not want to fight the Americans.
According to “Ynet,” the Israeli military establishment believes the developments could carry strategic repercussions extending to the Mediterranean Sea, with fears of the emergence of a naval alliance led by Iran, especially as about 98 percent of Israeli imports arrive by sea, prompting the Navy to expand its capabilities in the coming years.
