In a report prepared by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education in May 2026, titled “Educational Situation Report in Gaza (2023-2026): Statistical Reality, Diagnosis of Collapses, and Field Response,” the Ministry stated that statistics from the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip confirmed that more than 20,051 school-aged students were killed.

Before the outbreak of the war, the total number of school buildings was 584, including 309 government schools, 182 UNRWA schools, 70 private schools, and 23 special education schools. The Israeli aggression resulted in varying degrees of damage to school buildings, ranging from total or partial destruction to severe, moderate, or minor damage. Some schools are now inaccessible, according to the report from the General Directorate of Educational Buildings.

Fifty-nine public schools, one private school, and four special education schools sustained minor damage, while 50 public schools and two private schools suffered moderate damage. Eight public schools, 11 private schools, and two special education schools sustained severe damage.

Furthermore, 12 public schools, 26 private schools, and six special education schools suffered partial destruction, while 55 public schools, 30 private schools, and 11 special education schools were completely destroyed.
