The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Lebanon, Anandita Philippos, warned of the worsening suffering of women and girls due to conflict and displacement. She noted that the number of displaced people in the country has reached approximately 1.4 million – more than 20% of the population – including 16,000 pregnant women who face increasing challenges in accessing healthcare and protection.

In an interview with UN News, Philippos stated that women and girls constitute more than half of the displaced population, adding that Lebanon has one of the highest displacement rates in the world. She explained that recent airstrikes in southern Lebanon damaged health centers and hospitals.

She emphasized that UNFPA relies on mobile clinics to reach those affected, but cannot replace maternity services and specialized care, which require safe and well-equipped hospitals. She also stressed the importance of continued humanitarian access and an end to hostilities.
