In a shocking statement from the heart of the tragedy, James Elder, a spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),revealed the unprecedented suffering endured by the residents of the Gaza Strip, as families struggle daily to provide a single meal for their children amidst the influx of rockets and bombs that far outweighs the incoming food aid.
Elder, who is currently in Khan Yunis on an official mission, explained that the hope that appeared with talk of a ceasefire has quickly evaporated due to the disastrous blockade imposed on humanitarian aid. He noted that Gaza has been living an ongoing nightmare for more than 600 days, without shelter, food, or hope.
The UN official revealed horrific scenes of mothers forced to endure hunger for two consecutive days just to provide a single meal for their children, while displaced families in tents face a new wave of displacement under the fire of shelling, without any protection or safe shelter. Elder warned of an escalating health disaster, explaining that “acute malnutrition increases the likelihood of children dying from simple diseases tenfold, in light of the lack of healthy food, water contamination, and the collapse of the health system.”
