The Father Who Thought He Was Sacrificing for His Family

Yesterday, I watched a film titled The Story of the Sick Father. It tells the story of an ordinary family consisting of a father and mother, a daughter in her early twenties, and two sons—one in his final year of high school and the other a toddler who had not yet reached his second birthday.

I will try to recount its events briefly, because some of the situations it portrayed made me reflect on the immense sacrifices many fathers make, and on how a person can sometimes find themselves facing circumstances so harsh that every path forward seems to have been closed off.

The family lived a quiet and stable life. The father, in his early fifties, owned a small auto repair shop. He was known among people for his honesty and dedication to his work, while his wife took care of the household and their children continued their education. After years of hard work and perseverance, he finally managed to buy a new house in one of the upscale neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city.

While the family was moving their belongings into the new house, the father suddenly became dizzy and collapsed. His family rushed to his side, splashed water on his face until he regained consciousness, and urged him to go to the hospital. He refused, believing it was nothing more than a cold or simple exhaustion.

But the dizziness returned several times, so he finally decided to see a doctor and undergo the necessary examinations. There, he received devastating news: the doctor told him he had lung cancer. Anxiously, he asked, “Does this mean I’m going to die soon?” The doctor replied that life and death are in God’s hands, and that many patients had recovered from the disease, but he stressed
