Saudi Arabia resorts to ship to ship its oil transfers to bypass Red Sea risks

Saudi Arabia has begun organizing shuttle transfers of its oil, involving offering shipments from locations off the Omani coast through ship-to-ship transfers, in an attempt to bypass navigation disruptions in the Red Sea.

According to reports published by both Reuters and Bloomberg, Aramco is offering oil shipments under a ship-to-ship transfer mechanism, before loading them onto larger tankers near the Omani coast, suggesting a partial redirection of Saudi exports originating from within the Arabian Gulf.
Information indicates that this step comes after Saudi Arabia increasingly relied on Yanbu port in the Red Sea to reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. However, the escalating risks in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandeb following the Yemeni naval blockade decision have pushed Saudi Arabia to seek alternative routes.
The information clarifies that some tankers resort to disabling tracking systems while sailing, in an attempt to reduce the chances of their movements being detected. Meanwhile, maritime transport operations via longer and more complex routes have become an option to bypass maritime chokepoints.

Asian Refineries Avoid the Red Sea:
In a related context, Bloomberg agency revealed today that Asian refineries are pressuring Saudi Aramco to change the loading ports for their oil shipments, due to the difficulty of finding tankers willing to sail through the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandeb, in light of the Yemeni naval blockade imposed on navigation to and from the Kingdom.
The agency quoted traders as saying that at least two Asian refineries have requested to receive Saudi oil shipments from the Egyptian port of Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean Sea instead of Yanbu port on the Red Sea. The requests relate to shipments scheduled for September under long-term contracts with Aramco.
