Rodents are multiplying in Gaza

25 مشاهدة

Gaza City has recently witnessed a significant increase in the number of rodents and rats, exacerbated by the harsh environmental conditions following the war, the accumulation of waste, and the damage to infrastructure. This has raised health concerns about the potential spread of diseases transmitted by these rodents, most notably Hantavirus, a rare but potentially dangerous viral disease if transmitted to humans. While widespread cases of this virus are not typically recorded, health experts warn of environmental conditions that could contribute to its emergence or transmission, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and rodent control services, as is the case in the Gaza Strip. Hantavirus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans through inhaling air contaminated with their droppings or by touching contaminated surfaces, making it directly linked to the proliferation of rats and mice in the surrounding environment. Given this situation, questions are mounting about the health preparedness of the Gaza Strip to monitor such diseases and the preventive measures in place to mitigate any potential risks, especially considering the deterioration of some essential public health and epidemic control services.
