Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
Officials at the US Department of Defense have revealed that military operations against Iran cost the treasury more than $11.3 billion during the first six days of the conflict’s outbreak, in an indication of the rapid financial depletion of American military capabilities.
The officials indicated in a closed briefing for legislators on “Capitol Hill” that the figure doesn’t reflect the full cost, as it didn’t include expenses related to mobilizing forces and equipment before the strikes began.
Congress expects costs to escalate as the Pentagon completes calculating the cumulative expenses for the first week.
Army data showed unprecedented consumption of munitions, amounting to $5.6 billion in the first two days alone, compared to estimates by independent research centers such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which estimated the cost of the first 100 hours at $3.7 billion, with a daily spending rate of approximately $891.4 million.
Experts explained that the high costs resulted from using expensive weapons in the first strike, such as AGM-154 glide bombs costing $836,000 each, prompting the Pentagon to later turn to using less expensive munitions like JDAMs, costing about $38,000 per unit.
These figures led to a political division within Congress, as Republican representatives, led by Senator Mitch McConnell, called for increased funding for munitions production, while other representatives expressed reservations about additional funding packages for a conflict that could last a long time.
For their part, Democratic legislators emphasized the necessity for Congress to obtain accurate details about the military strategy and withdrawal plan before approving any emergency funding.
