The head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, Abdullah al-Zaghari, called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to take immediate action to resume its visits to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers and to exert pressure to halt the unprecedented escalation of violations against them since the start of the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted al-Zaghari as saying in a statement on Tuesday: “The scale of the crimes and violations committed against the prisoners, which are being monitored daily by relevant institutions, has exceeded all bounds of imagination, especially with the completion of the sentences of a number of prisoners who were arrested in the early stages of the genocide and their subsequent release.”
He added: “The testimonies and accounts they have given reveal a terrifying and shocking level of crimes and violations, reflecting the extent of the systematic destruction targeting the prisoners on both the physical and psychological levels. This destruction is a result of systematic torture, starvation, continuous assaults, and other crimes that have become the defining characteristics of the genocidal approach practiced by the Israeli prison system against them.”
Al-Zaghari pointed out that the issue of preventing the International Committee of the Red Cross from visiting prisoners today represents a real test of the international community’s ability to protect the international humanitarian system and preserve its mandate, in light of the occupation’s continuous attempts to target international institutions operating in Palestine, undermine their role, and strip them of their ability to perform their tasks guaranteed by international law.
