Today, Sunday, the Gaza Municipality reported that the city is witnessing an unprecedented deterioration in basic services, with the water and waste crises worsening as a result of infrastructure destruction and a lack of resources, which threatens an escalating humanitarian and environmental catastrophe that threatens the lives of residents in various regions. The engineer working in the Gaza municipality, Maher Salem, said that during the first quarter of 2026, the current indicators witnessed a sharp collapse in the water, sanitation and municipal services sectors, according to the Palestinian “Sanad” agency. And “Salem” explained that the water pumping decreased from about 100,000 cubic meters per day before the war, to only about 35,000. He stressed that the per capita share of water decreased from 80 liters per day to about 10 liters, in light of a deficit exceeding 90% of the actual population’s need. He pointed out that the infrastructure was destroyed, as about 195,000 linear water networks and 220,000 meters of sewage networks were destroyed, in addition to the majority of wells out of service. In the waste file, he indicated that the city is witnessing a daily accumulation of about 700 tons, with the total accumulated waste reaching hundreds of thousands of tons as a result of the inability to reach the main dumps.
