A mother and her child were killed in a fire inside a tent for the displaced in Gaza City

A Palestinian mother and her child were killed on Thursday, and a third person was injured, in a fire that broke out in a tent sheltering displaced people in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City.

The Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza said in a statement that its crews “recovered the bodies of two martyrs (a mother and her child) and evacuated one injured person after a fire broke out inside a tent in the Yarmouk shelter.”

The statement did not mention the cause of the fire or provide further details about the incident, saying only that the relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are living in tents and temporary shelters, facing a severe shortage of safe housing supplies, after the extensive Israeli war destroyed entire residential areas and forced residents to flee.

Most tents lack basic safety features, making them vulnerable to fires, especially given the use of rudimentary heating and cooking methods amid power outages and fuel shortages.
