Why is more money spent on war than on reconstruction Questions that expose Saudi Arabia s role in Yemen
Exclusive Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
Yemeni activists and politicians have sparked a wave of controversy on social media platforms regarding the scale of Saudi spending on its war in Yemen compared to the support provided for developmental and economic aspects.
They questioned the reasons for directing huge sums—estimated at nearly one trillion dollars—towards military operations under various titles at a time when these efforts have not achieved their declared objectives, despite the immense human, material, and strategic losses.
The participants in the discussion affirmed that, in their view, the wide gap between military spending and developmental support reflects a tendency not aimed at helping Yemen achieve economic advancement as much as it seeks to impose political and security influence over it.
They considered that the development projects offered have remained limited and do not rise to the level of the enormous humanitarian and economic needs suffered by the country due to the war that Saudi Arabia has led against Yemen for years.
They also pointed out that Saudi interventions in Yemeni affairs are not a recent phenomenon of the last few years but extend back decades, asserting that these interventions were largely negative in character. Some cited prominent historical events, including the assassination of President Ibrahim Al-Hamdi, considering it part of a broader context of influencing the course of Yemeni political decision-making.
They added that during previous periods, Saudi Arabia established what was known as the “Special Committee,” which was used to buy the loyalty of political and military figures and tribal sheikhs, which is considered direct interference in the affairs of a sovereign state and a violation of the principles of international relations.
They also referred to what they considered pressures exerted on foreign oil and investment companies to prevent them from working in Yemen, whether directly or indirectly,
