The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Omran Risa, said on Tuesday that about one million people are still displaced by the Israeli war that has been going on since last March. And Risa added, during a symposium organized in Beirut in cooperation between the International Labor Organization and the Lebanese Ministry of Labor, entitled “Social Justice… Decent Work”, and excerpts from it were broadcast on Al Jazeera Mubasher, that 1.4 million people in Lebanon need humanitarian assistance. He added that humanitarian assistance, no matter how necessary, is not sufficient, noting that the current crisis in Lebanon is not only humanitarian, but also economic and social. The UN official said that many families were forced to move and displacement repeatedly, in light of the insecurity, damaged infrastructure and interruption of services. Risa stressed that the current crisis is related to the labor market, saying that people need food, housing, health care and protection, and that they need income, work and dignity to be able to take care of their families.
He talked about the situation of companies in light of the current crisis in Lebanon, noting that they need favorable conditions to ensure their sustainability to protect jobs. He said that companies are under great pressure in light of the ambiguity, the affected markets, the increase in prices, and limited access to liquidity, adding that workers are facing job losses, wages and purchasing power, amid unsafe conditions.
