The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called for “an end to procrastination and evasion, and a recognition that what the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip have been subjected to for nearly two years is genocide perpetrated by Israel.”
In a joint statement with the International Institute for Rights and Development before the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Monitor highlighted that “Israel is focusing on obscuring the truth and concealing evidence by targeting civil society institutions that document violations, dismantling accountability mechanisms at various levels, and systematically killing journalists and UN staff.”
It emphasized that “the unprecedented Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip would not have occurred had it not been for the international community’s normalization of genocidal practices.”
In her statement before the Council, Lema Bustami, Head of the Monitor’s Legal Unit, said: “I am talking about the genocide that you refuse to call by its name. If this is not genocide, what is it? Or should international law be rewritten just to exonerate Israel once again?”
“In this genocide, Israel is erasing truth and evidence, dismantling accountability mechanisms, banning, discrediting, and defunding civil society organizations, and killing journalists and UN staff,” she added. “But nothing said here will change anything; words cannot match the horrors of what is happening in Gaza, which you witnessed and then chose to ignore, knowingly.”
