The UAE loses more shipping routes following a Saudi hint at an aerial blockade
The pace of confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the UAE intensified on Saturday, as escalation between them returned to Yemen.
Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
The UAE lost further shipping routes in the wake of a Saudi threat of an aerial blockade. Algeria announced the cancellation of an air transport services agreement it had concluded with the UAE in 2013. The official agency confirmed that the step has entered into force without providing further details.
Algeria’s announcement came hours after Saudi Arabia hinted at an aerial blockade on the UAE. Ahmed Al-Fifi, a colonel in the Saudi army, wrote a tweet discussing his country’s decision to impose an aerial blockade on the UAE, attaching a picture of a Saudi “F-16” fighter jet.
It is unclear whether Algeria’s step was coordinated with Saudi Arabia in advance or resulted from disagreements with Abu Dhabi. Algeria is one of several Arab countries that recently announced preventing Emirati cargo planes from flying through their airspace amidst the intensifying confrontations with Saudi Arabia in Yemen.
Among the most prominent of those countries is Somalia, which announced the cancellation of a similar agreement, not to mention Egypt, which prevents the passage of Emirati military cargo to Sudan, prompting Abu Dhabi to resort to complex and long maritime routes.
Algeria’s move comes as escalation between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh returns to Yemen. The UAE has once again moved its factions in the oil-rich areas of eastern Yemen in retaliation against Saudi Arabia, which announced the formation of a new government in Aden from which all figures affiliated with the UAE were excluded.
