Lebanon Sidon s waste besieges residents

The waste crisis in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon is worsening, with garbage piling up in the streets, emitting foul odors, and attracting insects, rodents, and stray dogs.

Residents complain of having to inhale the stench emanating from the garbage, warning of an increase in diseases, germs, and insects. They point out that the accumulation of waste is also impacting restaurants and businesses, at a time when the city is already struggling with high prices and a declining ability to afford basic necessities.

Residents are demanding that the municipality take a more active role, strengthen oversight and management, and secure the necessary funding to address the crisis. They emphasize that they pay the required fees and subscriptions, yet garbage collection is frequently disrupted due to issues related to workers’ rights and the financing of waste treatment plants. They are calling for a radical solution to prevent the continued accumulation of garbage in the city’s streets.
