Hitting a ship carrying Qatari gas cargo by a projectile while crossing the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s “Fars” news agency reported, citing satellite data, that a ship carrying a cargo of Qatari liquefied natural gas was struck by a projectile while crossing the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz.

The agency stated that the ship, named “Gaslog Shangal” and flying the Bermuda flag, was crossing what it described as the “illegal route” south of the strait, adding that it had switched off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) during the crossing.
The agency did not provide details regarding the extent of damage or casualties, and no immediate comment was issued by Qatari authorities, the ship’s operator, or relevant maritime bodies.
This comes amid continued tension in the Strait of Hormuz, where the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had previously affirmed that the strait will not be reopened as long as, in its description, “American threats and interventions” in navigation movement continue.
The Revolutionary Guard had announced in July the re-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the US of pushing commercial ships to use a southern passage that Tehran considers illegal, and affirming the continuation of its procedures in the strait.
Iranian authorities indicate that navigation traffic through the strait has significantly declined, with a number of ships refraining from crossing and others being forced to change course after receiving warnings from Iranian naval forces.
