Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
Lloyd’s List magazine reported that Protection and Indemnity (PI) clubs within the International Group quickly arranged “buyback” coverage for voyages in the Red Sea, after reinsurance companies withdrew their support for supplementary war risk insurance products. However, the new arrangement includes a comprehensive exclusion for Saudi-linked ships from these coverages.
The magazine indicated that the step prevented a repetition of the sharp spikes in insurance premiums that the market witnessed during previous geopolitical crises, but it imposed new restrictions on Saudi-linked ships.
These developments came after notifications issued by marine insurance clubs canceling some war risk coverages in areas of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean.
“Skuld” announced on August 12 that the cancellation would begin as of 00:01 GMT on August 16, following its receipt of a cancellation notice from reinsurance companies regarding some commercially reinsured war risks, due to developments in the Red Sea and what it described as heightened geopolitical and operational uncertainty.
The scope of the cancellation includes voyages to, from, or through the specified areas, and also includes the Saudi coast on the Red Sea located within the specified area, the Yemeni coast, and the Bab Al-Mandeb traffic separation scheme.
The developments indicate that the tightening of the insurance market is not limited to the cancellation of some policies, as Lloyd’s List had previously reported that insurance companies have begun greater scrutiny of Saudi-linked voyages, with some underwriters avoiding ships linked to Saudi ports, shipments, or Saudi commercial interests.
The Joint War Committee has also expanded the risk area in the Red Sea, making access to northern Saudi ports such as Jeddah and Yanbu subject to additional premiums.
According to what Lloyd’s List quoted from market brokers, quotes for new coverages are offered on a case-by-case
