The crisis of medicines and medical supplies in the Gaza Strip is worsening

Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, confirmed that 50% of medications in the Gaza Strip have run out, with stocks now at zero. He noted the unavailability of more than 300 types of medications for chronic diseases and pointed to a 70% shortage of medical supplies, amounting to approximately 550 different medications.

In press statements, Abu Salmiya also indicated an 80% shortage of laboratory materials and the shutdown of X-ray, MRI, and CT scanners. He warned that the lack of diagnostic and treatment tools is depriving patients and the wounded of life-saving treatment opportunities.

These warnings align with recent UN reports documenting the ongoing severe shortage of medications, supplies, and laboratory reagents. A recent joint UN assessment concluded that more than half of Gaza’s hospitals are out of service due to the damage and destruction inflicted on the healthcare infrastructure.
