Seven-year-old Hala Labad lies in her bed at Al-Shifa Hospital, her small body bearing the marks of injuries sustained in an Israeli attack on June 2nd that killed her parents and two siblings. Hala is being cared for by her aunt, Hanin Labad, who recounts the harrowing night when Hala was the sole survivor of the fire that engulfed her family home. Hala’s physical injuries are compounded by the psychological trauma of losing her family, and she repeatedly asks about her parents.
According to Al Jazeera, approximately 17,000 children in Gaza have been orphaned or separated from their parents or primary caregivers since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2013. The ongoing violence has killed at least 21,289 children and left many others with serious injuries. Psychologists warn that these children face an increased risk of trauma, anxiety, and depression.
The situation remains dire despite the ceasefire declared last October, with reports of continued Israeli attacks. UNICEF has documented that nearly one child is killed every day, with hundreds more injured. Hala’s case is just one of many, highlighting the devastating impact of conflict on its youngest victims.
Access to appropriate medical treatment for injured children remains critically limited, raising concerns about the long-term consequences of their injuries. Health officials warn that delays in care can severely impede their chances of recovery, compounding the profound trauma these children are experiencing. The plight of Gaza’s children continues to draw attention as they confront the painful realities of war and loss.
